When I tell people that I am a Reiki Master, one of the first things I get asked is “what is Reiki?” and too be honest, it’s a really hard question to answer. Reiki really needs to be experienced.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a form of alternative therapy that originated in Japan and has been practiced for over a century. The word ‘Reiki’ is derived from two Japanese words: ‘Rei’ meaning ‘universal’ and ‘ki’ meaning ‘life force energy.’
How does Reiki work?
The body has a natural ability to heal itself. However, due to stress, negative thoughts, and emotions, the body's energy flow can become blocked, leading to various health problems. Reiki works by clearing these blocks and restoring the flow of energy, thereby promoting physical and emotional healing.
What Happens in a Reiki Healing?
First of all, Reiki is done while you’re fully clothed with the only thing that needs to be removed is your shoes. I will ask you get comfy on a massage table, cover you with a blanket and if it is your first visit, I will run through the hand positions and ask you a few questions.
With light touch I move through a series of non-invasive hand positions, which I will hold for about three minutes. Starting at the head, I work my way down your body clearing any blocked energy and then once I reach your feet, I will get you to turn over and then I work my magic down your back. Interestingly enough I have found that the energy held in the front of our body can be different to the energy held in our backs. Our front energy can be more about how we want the world to see us, whereas the energy down our back can be more of a true reflection of how we are feeling.
While I work to a series of set hand positions, I can also be drawn to areas of the body where the energy might need a bit more work, this could be an old injury or a current ache or pain you are experiencing. The amazing thing about our bodies is that they will also direct where the energy is most needed.
Once finished you will feel lovely and calm and centred. I always advise my clients to drink plenty of water after a healing, to take it easy and to be kind to themselves. With the movement of old and new energy, it can be quite normal to also feel a bit emotional after a healing.
Benefits of Reiki
Reiki has many benefits, including:
· It helps alleviate anxiety;
· Boosts the immune system;
· Can help with clarity around decision making;
· Offers great stress relief; and
· Balances the mind, body and soul.
I had my first reiki healing about 5 years ago and after that, I was hooked. All I had to do was lie on a table for an hour, so no effort required on my part, and I came away feeling amazing. I wanted to be able to do that for other people and that was the motivation to becoming a Reiki Master myself.
Any day I get to do Reiki on a client is a good day. I love the fact that when people come to see me for a Reiki, they walk away in a much better state than when they came in.
Much love
