Why do Feelings Matter in your Planning Process?

Do you create an endless to-do lists that focuses purely on getting stuff done?
Does it look something like: wake up, smash my morning meeting, power through emails, finish project, squeeze in a workout... Sounds like a incredible day, but have you given any thought to how you want to feel doing these tasks?
I totally get it, checking off tasks feels amazing (I'm a huge fan of it too!), but have you noticed how you can complete everything on your list and still feel... ho hum? It could be because you’re only planning half of our day – the “doing” part, and not taking into account the “being” part.
Take a minute to think about this, your mood isn't just about you feeling good or bad, it's like this invisible thing that affects everything we do.
When you think about it, our moods impact:
- That morning chat with a colleague
- Whether that creative project flows or feels like a struggle
- How present we are when we’re spending time with loved ones
- Even how well we sleep at night
I am in no way suggesting you need to turn into a feelings expert or spend hours journaling (unless that's your thing!). However, maybe try adding a little emotional planning when you are doing your to do list.
For example, it might look like something below:
Instead of just writing:
"9 AM - meeting"
Try:
"9 AM - meeting (going in with calm, open energy)"
Look, you're just not going to feel like a ray of sunshine all the time, and that's absolutely fine! This isn't about forcing positive vibes 24/7, it's about being intentional with your energy and emotions.
Also maybe sprinkle your day with little moments that help you hit reset:
- Maybe it's a 5-minute break between calls
- A quick walk around the block when you're feeling stuck
- Your favourite playlist while tackling boring tasks
- Actually eating lunch away from your desk (crazy idea, I know!)
We spend so much time planning what we're going to do, but maybe not so much time on how we want to feel while doing it. By including how you want to feel in your planning, it turns a normal Tuesday into a day that actually feels good. It's what makes the difference between just surviving
your day and actually enjoying it.
Next time you're planning your day/week, take a second to think about how you want to feel. Because at the end of the day, isn't that what we're really after? Not just ticking boxes, but actually feeling good about how we spent our time?
Remember, we’re humans with feelings and energy levels that change throughout the day. Work with that, not against it.
Much love
